About Michelle Malan
Michelle Malan is a contemporary South African artist whose work explores the powerful intersection between realism, emotion, spirituality and raw elemental expression. Michelle’s early life, motherhood and marriage were shaped by many trials and challenges. Driven by a deep desire to help others, she completed two higher qualifications simultaneously at the AAA School of Advertising: a BA in Visual Communication and a Higher International Diploma in Marketing Communications. She then spent 15 years in the corporate and professional world, becoming a successful marketing and sales agent in the fresh produce industry. Throughout that time, art and advertising remained enduring passions. Michelle has also walked a long journey of inner healing and self-discovery, supporting many men and women on similar paths. Today, she aims to speak to the souls and emotions of her audience through her artwork.
Her paintings are created to be felt, experienced and create a presence, an atmosphere even before they are understood. Her paintings encourage a connection with the various elements of expression while relating differently to the realism of the main subject of the painting, targeting deep, private and personal emotion. Working across figurative portraiture, expressive wildlife and spiritually inspired imagery, Michelle combines meticulous realism with bold contemporary intervention. Her subjects possess an unmistakable presence eyes, intense cropping and intentional placement that confront the viewer, faces that communicate beyond words, and animals that embody strength, instinct, freedom and spirit. Her signature approach brings together highly detailed realism, dramatic contrast, expressive colour and gestural contemporary accents, often allowing controlled precision and spontaneous movement to exist within the same work.
